Han, Setzer, Finckel piano trio

Pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer, and cellist David Finckel opened our 71st season and they are back, renowned for their exceptional chamber music performances. Audiences will recall Finckel and Setzer’s long tenure with the legendary Emerson Quartet. Han and Finckel also lead the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music@Menlo in California’s Silicon Valley. 

Finckel is also co-founder of the independent record label ArtistLed, producer of the “Cello Talks” online tutorials, professor of cello at the Juilliard School and visiting professor of music at Stony Brook University.

His more than 80 releases on the ArtistLed, CMS Live, and Music@Menlo LIVE labels include the staples of the cello-piano duo repertoire with Wu Han and masterworks of the chamber repertoire with numerous musicians. In recent seasons, Finckel has designed and produced more than 200 digital media projects that brought the art of chamber music into communities across the United States.

Wu Han co-founded ArtistLed and also serves as an artistic advisor for Wolf Trap’s Chamber Music at the Barns series and the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach. In 2022, she became the artistic director of La Musica International Chamber Music Festival.

Setzer, a Cleveland native, is on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Stony Brook University on Long Island. He has given master classes at schools around the world, including The Curtis Institute, London’s Royal Academy of Music, The San Francisco Conservatory and UCLA.

Critics praise the Han, Setzer, Finckel performances as exhilarating, precise, and deeply expressive, making them a benchmark for piano trios. “Wu, Finckel and Setzer have played together for so long (Finckel and Setzer since they were teenagers) that their ensemble is seamless,” wrote a Washington Post reviewer. “The three moved with almost sensual rhythmic subtlety from moments of high energy to supreme calm and back again.” Reviewers have commented on the vivid connection among the three players. “The performers were smiling and clearly delighting in both each other and the music, which was not just refreshing but inspiring and beautiful to behold: music as it should be.” (The Strad)
