Curtis on Tour: Dohnányi Sextet

Presented by the Curtis Institute of Music, cellist Nicholas Canellakis leads a program centered around Ernst von Dohnányi’s sextet for the unique combination of piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, and horn.
Canellakis and emerging artists will open the program with virtuosic duos by Schumann and Halvorsen (variations on a theme by Handel) and the lyrical Brahms Clarinet Trio. Extraordinary emerging artists share the stage with celebrated alumni and faculty.
Canellakis is one of today’s most sought-after and innovative cellists, whose career seamlessly blends traditional classical performance with boundary-pushing creative ventures. He performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician and is also a composer/arranger, artistic curator, teacher, and filmmaker, with comedic digital content that has reached millions of views worldwide.
Canellakis is on the cello faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, his alma mater. A long-time artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, he appears regularly in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and on international tours.
Curtis on Tour is the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. Embracing the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, ensembles are infused with the energy and passion of extraordinary emerging artists performing alongside celebrated alumni and faculty.
In addition to performances, musicians engage with local communities through educational and community engagement activities. For more than 15 years, Curtis on Tour has maintained a presence at top international concert halls, performing more than 450 concerts in over 120 cities, from New York to Berlin and Hong Kong to Santiago.

- Schumann: Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, for horn and piano
- Halvorsen: Sarabande con Variazioni on a Theme by George Frideric Handel, for violin and viola
- Brahms: Trio in A minor, Op. 114, for clarinet, cello, and piano
- Dohnányi: Sextet in C major, Op. 37, for piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, and horn
